Swissport International has signed a contract with International Airlines Group (IAG) to provide airport ground services for IAG’s airlines at the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BER) for three years.

The company has been providing numerous ground services to 17 carriers since opening the new airport in Germany.

Under the new agreement, a British Airways (BA) flight to Heathrow, London, UK, was the first flight handled by Swissport at the new airport.

The contract includes providing airport ground services for British Airways, Vueling and Iberia flights, covering ramp handling, aircraft cleaning, passenger services at check-in and gates, baggage loading and pushback services.

Swissport will initially handle three flights a weekend in March, which will extend to two daily flights from 1 April.

Swissport Berlin managing director Carsten Zuberbier said: “We are honoured by the trust placed in us by IAG and their airlines at our new base in Berlin.

“Our customers can rely on our quality services and the full dedication of our passenger service and ramp agents. As the first-choice partner for airlines around the world, Swissport supports the restart of aviation on the ground as the sector emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic.”

The company is also operating a contemporary air cargo warehouse at Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

Last year, Swissport handled around 7,400t of air cargo and served nearly one million passengers in Berlin.

Last month, Swissport secured a cargo handling contract from the Lufthansa Group for London Heathrow Airport (LHR) in the UK. According to the contract, Swissport agreed to handle Lufthansa Group’s cargo for all UK destinations.
